Honorary Life Membership awarded to Jan Heppenstall, Philippa Lines and John McColl

At the Club’s AGM on the 13th Nov 2019, Honorary Life Memberships were awarded to Jan Heppenstall, Philippa Lines and John McColl for their significant contribution to Penguins as follows:

Jan Heppenstall – Jan has been a member of Penguins for over 30 years. She joined initially as a supportive parent for her children Simon and Claire. She served on the Committee for over 10 years holding a number of senior posts including Club Secretary and Welfare Officer. She also qualified as a Swimming Teacher in 1988 and is now arguably one of the Club’s most experienced and respected Teachers. Although her children have long since stopped swimming regularly with the Club, Jan has continued to teach and coach three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. In 2012 she was awarded the Merit Cup for services to the Club “beyond the call of duty” and in 2017 she was given the honorary role of Club President.

Philippa Lines – Philippa has been a member of Penguins for over 30 years. She joined Penguins initially through her interest in Life Saving and then became involved as a supportive parent for her children Peter and Judy. Philippa has served on the Committee for many years and has taken lead responsibility for organising the Club’s very successful Presentation Evening for the past few years. She also acts as the single point of contact for the Club’s Learn to Swim lessons on Sunday mornings, and is on hand to help on poolside when needed. She also regularly volunteers for other roles including Team Manager, Recorder, organisation of the team bus and catering for the Club Championships. She has been awarded the Merit Cup for services to the Club “beyond the call of duty” on two occasions in 2004 and in 2016. Although Judy no longer swims regularly at the Club, Philippa continues to be a very active volunteer to the present day.

John McColl – John has been a member of Penguins for over 30 years. John like many of the Club’s officials came into swimming as a supportive parent for his sons Christopher, Richard and Tom. He qualified as a Timekeeper, Recorder, Judge and Starter and has been the Club’s first choice starter for many, many years. Even though his children have long since stopped swimming, John continues to officiate regularly at the Club Championships, Sprint Nights, Wilts County Winter and Summer League Championships as well as external competitions such as the Primary School Games. When the Club has to host the Winter and Summer Leagues, John will travel to any location to officiate without hesitation and has never once said “No”.
