Movement criteria

Objectives for learn to swim stages.

Group 1 (20 – 36 weeks)

  • Travel 2 widths on front using basic arm stroke and kick.
  • Travel 2 widths on back using basic arm stroke and kick.
  • Travel 1 width Breaststroke kick with/without aids.

(Doesn’t have to be perfect as long as the legs make the correct movement that’s fine not looking for turning feet out at this point)

  • Travel 1 width Butterfly kick.
  • Travel 1 width Breaststroke arms only (walking or swimming).
  • Travel 1 width Butterfly arms only (walking or swimming)
  • Perform a floating position on front and back.
  • Perform a minimum of 4 movements (other than strokes) using arms and/or legs to move 2 meters in the pool.
  • Perform a jump in to shoulder depth water
  • Push and Glide on front and back.
  • Rotation lateral and horizontal. (Handstands, logrolls, front to back horizontally.)
  • Regain standing position front and back.
  • Breathing out in the water and in at surface 5 times consecutively.

Group 2 (20 – 32 weeks)

  • Travel 4 widths on front using basic arm stroke and kick.
  • Travel 4 widths on front using basic arm stroke and kick.
  • Swimming on side enabling continuous breathing.
  • Travel 2 width Frontcrawl kick including breathing to the side
  • Travel 2/3 widths Breaststroke kick with/without aids.
  • Travel 2/3 widths Butterfly kick without aids.
  • Travel 1 width Breaststroke arm and legs.
  • Travel 2 widths single arm Butterfly (1 width left arm, 1 width right arm).
  • Push and Glide on front and log roll on to back.
  • Push and Glide on back and log roll on to front.
  • Push and glide to pool floor.
  • Perform a somersault within the water.
  • Perform a jump into deep water.
  • Perform a sitting dive.
  • Travel 1 width head first sculling.
  • Travel 1 width feet first sculling.
  • Perform stationary sculling or rotational sculling.

Group 3 (16 – 32 weeks)

  • Travel 4 widths Frontcrawl including a breathing pattern.
  • Travel 4 widths Backstroke with cupped underwater pull.
  • Travel 2/3 widths Breaststroke with correct timing (pull, breathe, kick, glide).
  • Travel 2/3 widths Butterfly (2 kicks 1 pull) with arms exiting the water.
  • Perform a sequence of skills to include 2 types of sculling 2 types of rotation and 2 floating shapes.
  • Perform a Frontcrawl tumble turn from a horizontal start.
  • Perform correct Breaststroke turns and Butterfly turns.
  • Perform Backcrawl touch turns to include stroke counting across width.
  • Perform a standing dive.
  • Tread water for 30 seconds.
  • Demonstrate a full understanding of buoyancy. Floating, sinking, head and feet first surface dives, Jumping to include straight jumps (pencil) and straddle.

Group 4 (16 – 30 weeks)

  • Travel 25 metres Frontcrawl with a breathing pattern.
  • Travel 25 metres Backstroke.
  • Travel 25 metres Breaststroke.
  • Travel 25 metres Butterfly (2 kick 1 pull) with arms exiting the water, straight arm recovery.
  • Demonstrate a variety of breathing patterns for frontcrawl and identify which is appropriate for distance to be swum.
  • Perform a Frontcrawl tumble turn 8 metres in 5 metres out with breath control 2 strokes in and 2 strokes out.
  • Perform a Backstroke tumble turn 8 metres in 5 metres out.
  • Perform a Breaststroke turn 8 metres in 5 metres out.
  • Perform a Butterfly turn 8 metres in 5 metres out.
  • Travel 10 metres underwater from start.
  • Perform starts in all strokes.
  • Perform finishes in all strokes.
  • Perform I.M. with correct starts, turns and finishes.
  • Perform a shallow racing dive from poolside.
  • Identify 3 types of dive and describe their uses.
  • Perform entries off blocks.
  • Perform a safe fall into deep water.
  • Travel 6 widths kick of all 4 strokes.
  • Perform 3 widths of each stroke with correct under water phases at start and turns.

Half hour lengths

Lanes 3 & 4 (26 – 36 weeks)

  • Travel 100 metres using 2 strokes and correct turns.
  • Travel 50 metres of each stroke with correct turns and correct technique.
  • Travel 100 metres kick of each stroke FC, Back, and Breaststroke.
  • Travel 50 metres kick of Butterfly (25 metres on front 25 metres on back).
  • Perform a 100 Individual Medley.
  • Perform a shallow racing dive off a starting block.
  • Perform a Backstroke start using a starting block.
  • Understanding lane etiquette, how to overtake safely, organising lane order etc. ( Have a ruling about how overtaking takes place and make sure all follow it.) (Other clubs will have different rules, make sure that they understand if they swim in mixed company other swimmers will believe they are right also so they need to be aware that there are different ways of overtaking but we use ours unless instructed otherwise.)
  • Using pace clock to control spacing in lane. Co-operating with other lane members to best facilitate space. (i.e getting those who can’t see clock going at correct time, organising fastest first in each stroke to facilitate no bunching and assisting each other)

Lanes 1 & 2 (26 – 36 weeks)

  • Travel 200 metres using 3 strokes and correct turns.
  • Travel 100 metres of FC, BK, and Breaststroke with correct turns and correct technique.
  • Perform a 10 minute kick.
  • Perform a 8 x 50 FC set timed (i.e. on 75, on 80).
  • Perform a 200 IM.
  • Swim 50 metres of each stroke from a racing start with correct turns.
  • Demonstrate understanding of pace and intensity.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of which paces are appropriate for which situations.
  • Using pace clock to take your pulse.
  • Perform a drill for each stroke and explain what the objective of each drill is and analyse whether they thought it to be effective.
  • Perform warm up and stretches appropriate for general training in all strokes.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the purpose of warm up and cool down.

Time frames are an estimate but if swimmers are achieving objectives before time frames we move them on up rather than keeping them back.
